There are several pests that can cause the homeowner problems, but one of the worst is the termite. Termites can be an efficient and destructive species because their society is segregated by function. That is, the termite has a caste system much like that of the ants. Each colony will have a queen that lays eggs and a king that fertilizes them. However, termites are a different species from ants. In fact, science has determined that termites are related to roaches. One thing that these two insects have in common is that they consume cellulose. Of course, the roach can eat a lot of other things, but termites developed into foragers that consume the waste from fallen leaves and dead trees. Once this pest has invaded a building, there is little that can be done to eliminate the problem except a complete Fumigation of the building.
There are literally thousands of termite types around the world and they have been around for millions of years. However, the three that cause property owners the most difficulty are Eastern subterranean termites, Drywood termites, and Formosan termites. The Formosan is also a subterranean termite, but it differs slightly from the Eastern termite. For one thing, the Formosan termite is a voracious consumer of cellulose and tend to do much more damage than other termite species. One way of determining if subterranean termites are attacking a home is to look for the tiny mud tubes they use for accessing the building. These small tubules are required because the termite can become dehydrated very quickly. The tubules protect them from this problem.
The most common reason to consider Fumigation when termites are a possibility is that the drywood termite can live almost anywhere there is wood. These pests burrow deep inside the wood they are consuming and colonies can number in the thousands. Termites expand their species by swarming. Specific termites will leave the nest in search of a new home. This is one reason that fiber cement siding has become so popular. Any cellulose in this siding is coated with cement and the termites cannot consume it. In most cases, they will fly away and look for another place to make their home.
